Join Scott Bass, Loren Israelsen, Bob Durkin, Jim Emme, and more industry luminaries for NutraIngredients-USA’s landmark DSHEA Summit.

In October 1994, President Bill Clinton signed the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA) into law. Of course, vitamins, pills and herbal products had been around for decades (and longer), but DSHEA created the modern industry. For the first time, it legally defined what a dietary supplement is (and is not). It clearly stated that dietary supplements were a sub-class of food and that dietary ingredients are not food additives. It created a framework for innovation and the development of New Dietary Ingredients (NDI). Furthermore, it outlined the need for quality standards (cGMPs).

The law opened the gates to 30 years of growth, going from 4,000 products and $4 billion in 1994 to 100,000+ products and an estimated value of $60 billion today. DSHEA has stood the test of time, but it isn’t perfect and not without its critics and opponents.

To mark the law’s 30th year, the DSHEA Summit, supported by the United Natural Products Alliance (UNPA), will bring together the architects of the law and key industry stakeholders to discuss the past, present, and future of the US dietary supplements industry.

Be in the room to hear from the people who were actually in the room during the passage and implementation of DSHEA! The DSHEA Summit will take place at the Hyatt Regency, Salt Lake City on Monday, June 10, 2024 from 8.30 a.m. to 2.00 p.m.

Confirmed speakers include:

  • Scott Bass, Partner, Global Life Sciences, Sidley Austin
  • Loren Israelsen, President and Founder, United Natural Products Alliance (UNPA)
  • Patricia Knight, Senior Political Advisor, UNPA & former Chief of Staff to Senator Orrin Hatch, R-Utah
  • Peter Reinecke, Senior Political Advisor, UNPA & former Chief of Staff to Senator Tom Harkin, D-Iowa
  • Robert Durkin, Partner, Arnall Golden Gregory LLP&former acting Director and Deputy Director, Office of Dietary Supplement Programs (ODSP), FDA
  • Jim Emme, CEO, NOW Health Group
  • George Paraskevakos, Executive Director, International Probiotics Association (IPA)
  • More speakers to be confirmed shortly…

What can you expect? The DSHEA Summit will explore the history of the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act, and the personalities and backroom discussions that forged the industry-defining law. We’ll also dig into how DSHEA has withstood the tests of 30 years of rapid scientific and technological advances, and we’ll take a cold-hard look at current industry compliance and federal enforcement. Finally, we’ll explore what the future of dietary supplement regulation could and should look like.

Commenting on the event, UNPA’s Israelsen said: “This will be an unprecedented gathering of the negotiators of DSHEA, former FDA officials, captains of industry, and maybe a critic or two who will reflect on why DSHEA was so necessary, so successful and yet remains controversial to many.

“After 30 years the mythology and the reality of DSHEA have blurred.  This panel will tell it as it was, as they see the industry today and what the future of DSHEA could look like.”
